Facts You Probably Didn't Know About Commercial Refrigeration
Your commercial refrigeration system might be an out-of-sight, out-of-mind appliance. However, they have a rich and interesting history and are considered technological marvels.
Our team is your local resource for all things commercial refrigeration, so we're here with four things you probably didn't know about your refrigeration system.
Refrigerators Were Invented With One Purpose
Chances are you store everything in your commercial refrigeration system, but when these units were first created, they weren't for ice cream and soda.
Initially, refrigeration units were created for the brewing industry. They needed cool temperatures to maintain their product and optimize beer production, and the first mechanical refrigerator was delivered in 1873 by an inventor named Carl von Linde.
The First Fridges Were Massive
The fridges of old are not the same as the new ones, and in the early 19th century, they could weigh up to five tons – that’s huge!
This made them far too large to install in homes, and it wasn't until 1925 that the first self-contained unit was made. It came in two parts, and the motor had to be connected from the basement to an ice-filled box with refrigerant on the upper floor.
Commercial Refrigeration Systems Are Vastly Different Now
The first refrigerators cost between $6000 and $13,000 in today's currency and were considered a luxury item.
Not only has the price changed, but units now have water dispensers, separate freezer compartments, different configurations and designs, and in 1996, started focusing on optimizing energy-efficiency.
The Future of Commercial Refrigeration Systems is Transforming
Commercial refrigeration units have morphed from just a door attached to a cold box to more like cutting-edge tech with customized storage solutions.
Many units now come with technological advancements like digital temperature controls to make sure your product is always at the perfect temperature and reduce the chances of food spoilage.
Some even have intelligent features that connect to Wi-Fi and the internet, giving you a remote way to monitor and control the system.
There's also a new tech out called the Crytocooler. It's designed using thermodynamics to transform electric currents into heat, resulting in a passive thermal circuit. The system uses heat to create a voltage that initiates a current that will continue flowing and cooling even after equalizing temperatures.
The very nature of this design can revolutionize the industry, especially for locations where there are no energy sources or there's a need for a change in the amount of energy used – talk about resourceful!
