What to Expect With New Refrigerants

What to Expect With New Refrigerants

Almost every type of refrigerator in the U.S. uses some form of refrigerant, and with the EPA calling for swapping out to less toxic options, you might be facing a move to a new type of refrigerant for your system.

Changing refrigerants might be confusing if you've never been through it, so the Solid Refrigeration team is here to help let you know what to expect with the switch.

Expect Better Efficiency

While the phase-out of older refrigerants might be a headache for some, one of the biggest advantages you can expect is better efficiency from your system. Most new replacements have improved thermal conductivity and higher refrigeration capacity, which can put more money in your pocket each month.

Combine this with regular maintenance, and you are sure to keep your equipment running as efficiently as possible.

More Eco-Friendly Refrigeration

One of the biggest measurements for alternative refrigerants is the GWP or global warming potential. The GWP was developed to measure how much energy the emissions of 1 ton of gas will be absorbed over a specific set of time, and the larger the number, the more the gas will warm the earth.

Compared to older refrigerants like R-22, alternatives like R-32's makeup are 1/3 lower, making it an eco-friendly option with that critical reduced impact on the environment.

Enhanced Durability

Next-gen is the way to go, and the new refrigerants on the market can potentially help your system run smoother. With their energy efficiency at the forefront, your system doesn't have to work as hard to maintain temperature, and some designs can run even cooler, decreasing the risk of the compressor burning out from overheating.

Possible Equipment Replacement

While you won't necessarily need to replace your equipment right away, keep in mind that the availability of parts and refrigerants specific to your older models will decrease, leading to an increase in cost as time goes on.

The efficiency level of the unit will also fall, so if you haven't swapped over to newer units along with newer refrigerants, it may make more financial sense to do a refrigeration replacement instead and let the new unit's efficiency pay for itself.
